September 3rd - 5th 2021
3. European Literatur Festival Cologne-Kalk
Friday, Sept 3rd
We officially start with the European Literature Festival Köln Kalk for the 3rd time. We say hello and present our programme.
“we met in german to talk about the arabic longing for hebrew”
In the opening reading at the beginning of the festival, you can hear all of this year’s guests.
Gisela Casimiro (Portugal/Guinea-Bissau), Andreea Simionel (Italy), Lütfiye Güzel (Duisburg/Germany), Luis Luna (Spain), Xoşewîst (Syria/Leipzig/Germany) and Mati Shemoelof (Israel/Berlin/Germany) present excerpts of their texts, their voices and languages live on stage. The texts will be read in their original language version and in German translation. Ramblin’ Boy Harrers accompanies the reading with his guitar.
Ramblin Boy Harrers
Blues, folk, music
Rambling Boy Harrers accompanies and closes the opening reading with his interpretations of well-known folk and country songs as well as his own songs. Though he has devoted himself to Artpop, he has been playing live concerts with guitar, harmonica and Blue Yodel in the traditional Country style since 2017. Inspired by Joan Baez, Odetta Holmes and Jimmie Rodgers, he lets old influences run into the present – without singer-songwriter attitude.
Saturday, Sept 4th
“Why it is okay to have a sandwich for a head”
Presentation of the results of the comic workshop
Before the actual festival, children between the ages of 8 to 10 years worked with comic artists Jacqui Mundri and author Bo Franke to create their own stories in text and drawings. We will be presented with a whole lotta art, an exhibition of bosses, burglars stealing silence, pressure and perfection.
“And, when I’m grown up, I want to live in a place with a heaven that can decide”
Reading with Andreea Simionel and Mati Shemoelof
Andreea Simionel and Mati Shemoelof migrated. And country and language migrated back into them. That caused poems about the temple of the Ausländerbehörde and stories about a sea forlorn elsewhere. Furthermore we speak about decisions in general and especially about those we cannot take. The reading will be in Italian, Hebrew, German, Arabic and English.
NULZ meets Kalk, Part 4
with: P.S. - Politisch Schreiben
During the festival the lecture series presenting literary magazines in Kalk will continue. Last year we presented mosaik from Salzburg and [kon]-paper from Munich. This year P.S. - Politisch Schreiben from Leipzig will make the beginning of magazine presentations. We will speak about the literary scene and in which way it can become more solidary. The event will be presented in German.
“Dolls with their eyes torn out”
Reading with Lütfiye Güzel and Luis Luna
Luis Luna and Lütfiye Güzel move in a tempest between everyday-life and apocalypse. While Luna is searching the dumps of the world for songs left over, only to find a butcher’s knife which smoothly cuts the wide linen of forgetting, Lütfiye Güzel sits in a washeteria and keeps the good clothes for another life. The reading will be in Spanisch, Russian, German and English.
NULZ meets Kalk, Part 5
with: Das NARR
The Narrativistische Literaturmagazin, or NARR in short, is around since 2011. It is not only part of the independent community of literary magazines NULZ, but also one of the most important literary magazines of Switzerland. We will speak with its publisher about the history of the NARR and listen to some authors who have published their texts in the magazines. The event will be held in German.
“And the whites on the clothes line seems to be / stained in my eyes”
Reading with Gisela Casimiro and Xoşewîst
Why only know one language? Xoşewîst takes languages as their are, chanting for eine Möglichkeit und der zweifelsfall seems to be the … Gisela Casimiro neither keeps the door of her poems closed, nor do they open by themselves. They come along like a child that plays accordion in the tube, a dog on its shoulders. The reading will be in Portugues, Arabic, Kurdish, Spanish, German and English.
live music with: János e Fiammetta
János e Fiammetta are Til Eyinck (Guitar and Vocals), Maxim Klusch (Vocals), Emilia Renn (Vocals) und Thilo Schmidt (Wind Instruments, Mandolin). The cologne-based band is inspired by singer-songwriters and musicians of all ages; especially noteworthy is our passion for Fabrizio De André, Leonard Cohen and Georges Brassens. Maybe they sound like an old port from a small city near the coast while it's getting dark and suddenly everyone has time to spare. Maybe different. But always fine.
try to set the night on fire
